‘Straws’ School Screenings: Engaging Youth with Film to Make a Difference.

I thought the documentary was absolutely amazing and it taught me a lot about plastics and how I could help the ocean. It taught me about alternatives for plastic I didn’t know about. I think other kids should definitely watch it. - Los Angeles Student

DALLAS - LOS ANGELES - COASTAL NC SCHOOL CAMPAIGNS FUNDED!

The L.A. tour, funded by private donors*, occurred Spring 2019. A total of 6,500 students from 220 classrooms saw the film. Post-film guest speakers included Jackie Nunez and Dianna Cohen from Plastic Pollution Coalition, STRAWS Executive Producer Andrea Arria-Devoe and John Zalvaney, Environmental Educator. Surveys were sent to students and teachers afterwards, with just over 3,000 total responses. The film screenings received high marks and students reported increased knowledge and behavioral intentions related to single-use plastic.

More specifically:

● Nearly 80% of the students committed to using alternatives to plastic whenever possible

● 84% of students are more concerned about the impact of plastic pollution on marine life as a result of seeing STRAWS

An initial pilot was conducted in Dallas in 2018, with EarthX Foundation funding 20 screenings across the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. STRAWS Director/Producer Linda Booker attended all the screenings for post-film discussions with Melanie Yonks, Director of Education and Outreach for EarthxFilm. The 2019 LA Impact Campaign Report by See Change Institute, also includes survey results and analysis of the 2018 Dallas campaign.

In the fall of 2019, twelve school screenings in North Carolina (New Hanover & Carteret Counties) were sponsored through a crowdfunder and local business contributions to fiscal sponsor The Southern Documentary Fund. Filmmaker Linda Booker presented a post-film program that included guest speakers from Cape Fear River Watch, Carteret Big Sweep, Coastal Carolina Riverwatch, Crystal Coast Waterkeeper, Keep New Hanover Beautiful, Ocean Friendly Establishments, Plaine Products, Sierra Club Cape Fear, Sierra Club Croatan and Surfrider Foundation Cape Fear Chapter. A survey report will be available in early 2020.

Los Angeles schools survey results indicated a high increase in knowledge. 91% of students have a better understanding of the problem of plastic pollution and 89% of students are more aware of how their actions affect the natural environment.

IMPACT CAMPAIGN GOALS

Educate and inspire up to 250,000 youth across the USA in grades 3-12 with STRAWS film screenings and expert guest speakers.

• Offer FREE LESSON PLANS** for Grades 3-12: NGSS-congruent, peer-reviewed, STEM approved lesson plans developed by Margaret Holzer, PhD (an award-winning veteran science educator and curriculum developer) challenges students to find out how and where plastic pollution accumulates, create and implement solutions, and then evaluate the results. Schools keep film and lesson plans to use over & over, multiplying the impact!

• Measure response to film and behavioral change of student’s relationship to single use plastics provided with surveys and evaluation reports conducted by See Change Institute.

We have enjoyed a really successful partnership with Video Project and filmmaker Linda Booker on an educational outreach campaign featuring her movie STRAWS. We have seen the immediate impact of this film on K-12 students in the DFW region. It fits directly with our goal to turn an emotional reaction from watching a film into action.
